The University of Cape Town and its Department of Information Systems

The Department of Information Systems in the Faculty of Commerce at the University of Cape Town (UCT) is the ESEFA Centre and is in charge of the local project operation, curriculum development and support, marketing and roll-out for the ESEFA programme.

UCT is South Africa's oldest university, and is Africa's top ranked university. UCT’s mission is to become a premier academic meeting point between South Africa, the rest of Africa and the world. Taking advantage of expanding global networks and its distinct vantage point in Africa, it is committed, through innovative research and scholarship, to grapple with the key issues of our natural and social worlds. The university is medium-sized in South African terms, with 25 500 students, and has a strong focus on research. The beautiful campus backs onto the iconic Table Mountain in Cape Town.

The Department of Information Systems (IS) forms part of the Faculty of Commerce, together with the Schools of Economics and Management Studies, College of Accounting, Department of Finance & Tax, and the Graduate School of Business.

The University implemented SAP R/3 in 1996 and the Department of IS started teaching Enterprise Systems (ES) at the same time. It has integrated ES teaching content into its postgraduate and undergraduate qualifications. The Department has a range of staff members with many years of experience and a broad range of technical skills, non-technical skills and research methodology knowledge. Its undergraduate curriculum is well aligned with the IS2010 international standard for Information Systems and the needs of local employers, and the vast majority of IS graduates find immediate employment. It has a strong PhD programme and postgraduate diploma brand.

The Department’s main research thrust is through its research unit, the Centre for Information Technology and National Development (CITANDA). CITANDA’s mission is to be the leading African centre for research into IS in Africa, producing world-class African scholars, and internationally recognised research outputs and postgraduate students.
